Bingo Number Nicknames – 81, 82 & 83

The traditional call for the number 81 is simply “stop and run”, which is just another rhyming call. 82 is either “straight on through” – which again we can only assume is a simple rhyme – or “fat lady with a duck”. This refers to the fact that the figure ‘8′ could be seen to resemble a “fat lady” (ahem), and the figure ‘2′ is conventionally supposed to look like a side-on view of a duck within bingo calling nicknames.
83 is either “time for tea”, which is another simple rhyme, or one of two other options – “fat lady with a flea”, as the ‘8′ looks like a “fat lady” and the ‘3′ is supposed to look like a “flea”, or “Ethel’s ear”. We assume this refers to a “fat lady” called Ethel, with the ‘3′ looking a bit like an ear.
