Bingo Number Nicknames – 84, 85 & 86

84 is traditionally called with the phrase “seven dozen”, as a result of it being 7 multiplied by 12 (a dozen) = 84. The number 85 is usually called with the phrase “staying alive”. There is obviously quite a famous film of this name, starring John Travolta, but as the film was only released in 1977, and the nicknames generally emanate from the 1950s and 1960s, we think this is probably a reference to the fact that a person who has reached the age of 85 is “staying alive”.
86 is another simple rhyme – “between the sticks” – which we can’t find a particular reference to, apart from it being the term for the position of a goalkeeper in football, which is unlikely to have resonated with a 1960s bingo audience!
